Case Studies
For information about creative solutions to noise problems, call Universal and ask for Industrial Sales. Universal supports a fully equipped Product Development Center for exploring new materials and methods of manufacture, and for qualifying the performance of filters and silencers. Universal manufactures air filters and silencers for blowers, industrial fans, gas turbines, vacuum pumps, valves, locomotives, and engines. Universal is an ISO 9001 registered firm and is ASME Code certified.
Universal Provides Silencers to the VPSA Application of a Copper Mine in South China
Universal succeeded in providing 10 silencers to a copper mine in Southern China with VPSA (Vacuum-Pressure Swing Adsorption) application.
Selective Catalytic Reduction System Reduces Mine Emissions
Universal has provided a complete turn-key Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to a remote Chilean copper mine. The mine's 90,000 kW stand-by power plant required seventy-two SCR units to reduce Nitrous Oxide (NOx) emissions by 88%.
Cleaning Truck Uses "Good Neighbor" Acoustic Silencing
Petersen Incorporated, an international engineering and design management firm, has collaborated with Universal on a silencing unit especially tuned to the primary frequency of the vacuum blower. As a result of their efforts, tests showed an audible difference over conventional truck designs.
Downtime and Expense Saved Through Refurbishment
Universal implemented a total system solution for Northern States Power (Minnesota, USA) by first conducting an extensive site evaluation. Universal then demolished the old stacks, engineered, designed, manufactured and managed the installation of the new stacks.
Custom Fan Silencer Reduces Plant Noise
Universal developed a special fan silencer design for General Motors (Wisconsin, USA) to reduce noise from an exhaust fan at the plant. Universal offers a standard line of rectangular fan silencers with parallel baffles, but was able to adapt the design quickly to the cylindrical configuration needed at GM.
Acoustic Silencing Delivers Quiet Power Generation
Universal has manufactured and shipped two special, three-component systems to a public utility in Guam on behalf of Waltz Engineering. Each system attenuates noise from a diesel generator and delivers the exhaust into the atmosphere.
Acoustic Silencers and Air Filtration for Wastewater Plant
Universal manufactured the noise control and air filtration solutions for the Roots blowers installed at a wastewater facility in the upper Midwest, USA. The project scope included three RISY-6 inlet silencers (foreground) and three SDS-6 discharge silencers (wrapped in background) to effectively lower the package noise. US also designed an inlet filtration unit that utilizes replaceable pleated paper panel filter elements to clean the blower air.
Filtration Systems Provide a Durable Solution
Universal designed these self-cleaning inlet filtration systems for two GE Frame 7 turbines used in milorganite processing. The system has been fully operational for eight years. Each inlet filtration unit is more than three stories tall and situated on the shores of Lake Michigan near the downtown Milwaukee Jones Island Port (Wisconsin, USA).
Gainesville Regional Utilities Filter Housings Upgrade
Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) Deer Haven Plant’s two GE Frame 5 filter houses were in dire need of an upgrade, for both performance and maintenance purposes. In use since the 1970’s, GRU’s automatic roll filters and filter houses had deteriorated and rusted beyond use. GRU called upon Universal to provide a turn-key filter system. Universal was selected not only on account of their expertise in inlet filtration and exhaust stacks, but also because they had partnered with GRU on several previous projects, fulfilling their acoustic and emissions needs time after time, in a quality, cost effective and timely manner.
Turnkey Turbine System in 5 Months!
Universal recently designed, dismantled, built and assembled a complete intake and exhaust system for Puget Sound Energy in less than 5 months - June to November, 2008. The replacement system was for a GE Frame 7A peak load generating station that was installed in 1980. Universal was awarded the project because of its experience in providing successful turbine system replacements around the world.
