Universal Provides Turnkey Turbine System in 5 Months!
September 10, 2009
Universal recently designed, dismantled, built and assembled a complete intake and exhaust system for Puget Sound Energy in less than 5 months - June to November, 2008. The replacement system was for a GE Frame 7A peak load generating station that was installed in 1980. Universal was awarded the project because of its experience in providing successful turbine system replacements around the world.
In order to minimize downtime, the inlet and exhaust demolition and installation were scheduled in conjunction with a major refurbishment of the turbine generator. The criteria only allowed a few weeks for actual site work and required Universal to employ excellent project management and communication skills to meet the tight deadline and work in conjunction with other contractors on-site. Universal took the opportunity to make improvements to the inlet filtration and controls designs to take advantage of technology changes that have taken place since the unit was initially installed. Mechanical fans were replaced with compact filter banks. The filters reduced site noise, lowered pressure drop, reduced power consumption and made maintenance easier.
