Universal Announces Formation of Emissions Division

December 12, 2008

For nearly 50 years Universal has been in the business of helping our customers manage the exhaust flow for their industrial engines. Our customers in the Power Generation, Oil and Gas, Processing, Marine, and Locomotive markets have witnessed the value we provide in designing and producing exhaust treatment systems. Universal President Randy Eppli states, "Over the past 5 years we have seen an ever increasing demand from our customers to help them be more environmentally conscious and meet higher air quality standards for exhaust emissions. This increasing demand from our customers and the marketplace has made us look internally to find a more effective way to serve the emissions treatment – clean air markets."

A New Division Dedicated to Exhaust Emissions

Today we are announcing that Universal has formed a new division dedicated to exhaust emissions technology named Universal Emission Technologies. The mission of this division will be to continue to invest in emissions technology that will allow Universal to further offer industry leading exhaust systems to our customers. This division will tap Universal's core business and customer base that has been centered on exhaust system technology solutions and supply for nearly 50 years. This experience, coupled with Universal's heritage of once being part of a diesel engine company, creates a logical next step to expand its investment in emissions treatment.

Formation of Emissions Division

To provide leadership to the Universal Emission Technologies division, Brian Kahl has joined the company as of November 3rd. Brian is uniquely qualified for this challenge as he has many years of industry experience, including a role within the emissions division at Nelson Industries, 5 years as Sales Director at Universal and most recently as the General Manager of the Global Exhaust Business Unit of Cummins Filtration.

Universal Brings Extensive Experience to New Division

Brian Kahl states, "It is important to note that emission technology is not new to Universal. Over 300 emission projects to date have been executed over the past 5 years. Today our customers are looking for a complete exhaust system provider. It is a natural business progression for Universal to extend its core technology base and further develop its emissions technology. "

Universal relationships, past and present, have established a solid foundation for this business to further prosper. Universal not only has several existing customer relationships with key OEM engine manufacturers around the globe, it also has relationships with key suppliers of SCR, Soot Filter and Oxidation catalyst systems. It is also important to remember that Universal was once owned by an engine company that had its own Emissions Solution business. Now independent, Universal has made a significant investment to secure talent with significant commercial, operational and technical experience in emissions technologies. For example, Jay Warner, our Manager of Emission Technologies, who joined Universal in November, 2007, brings to us 20 years of emission and acoustics technology experience.

New Division to Offer Complete Turn-Key Solutions for Exhaust Treatment

By focusing on our current customer base, Universal Emission Technologies will be in a unique position to offer a complete turn-key system for their exhaust treatment needs. These needs include noise control, back pressure minimization, thermal management, flow distribution optimization, structural integrity, project management, logistics, and of course, emissions treatment - all into a one, smart, optimally designed and manufactured solution.

Our customer base is continually challenging us to offer cost effective solutions. We believe this system approach will offer significant total cost of ownership saving opportunities with the latest technology available in the market. The formation of the Universal Emission Technologies division will allow us to focus on this market and to invest in technologies, people, and research.

A formal press conference is scheduled for 2 pm, Dec 2nd at the Power Generation Show in Orlando, FL, at the Show's Press Conference Center. We invite everyone to visit our booth number 1312 at the show (Dec 2nd to 4th) to view some of our emissions product.
