Universal Emission Technologies' DPF System Helps Energy Alternatives Comply with California Air Resources Board Standards

September 10, 2009

The Kroger Co.'s California distribution center recently purchased two 2-megawatt diesel engines through Energy Alternatives. To comply with the strict air pollution standards for diesel exhaust in the state of California, both engines were required to have California Air Resources Board verified Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) installed. In addition, rigorous acoustic silencing challenges needed to be solved. Universal Emission Technologies, a division of Universal, was awarded the project for the Diesel Particulate Filter systems because of their unique expertise in emission reduction and acoustics, and their ability to combine them in a single package.

DPF and Silencer Combined in Same Housing

While other companies proposed a separate and diesel particulate filter, each in their own respective housings, Universal offered an emission control system approach that combined the DPF and silencer in the same housing. This smaller and more cost effective unit provided precisely what Energy Alternatives was searching for. The two diesel particulate filter systems were shipped and installed in early 2009, and Kroger is very satisfied with the system. With a successful first installation in mind, Energy Alternatives decided to return to Universal for its emission treatment and silencing needs again in mid-2009. Energy Alternatives placed an order for four more identical units for another Kroger distribution center in California. These units are to be installed in early 2010 and will assist Kroger in running a fleet of compliant, clean, and quiet diesel engines.

Diesel Particulate Filter Project a Global Undertaking

The project was a global undertaking; systems specification was led by Universal's United Kingdom commercial office, design work completed at the Universal headquarters in Stoughton, WI and manufacturing performed by Universal's plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

Universal's Emission Reduction Product Line

Universal's emission reduction product line includes California Air Resources Board verified Level 3 PLUS Diesel Particulate Filter technology for all EPA Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 diesel engines for prime power and standby generator sets and diesel pump applications. A proven and effective technology, these filters provide a minimum of 85% reduction of Particulate Matter, and can also provide reductions of up to 95% of Carbon Monoxide and 90% of Hydrocarbons. Universal Emission Technologies makes possible the reduction of air pollution by also providing system solutions using 3-way catalysts, diesel oxidation catalysts and selective catalytic reduction systems, in addition to DPFs. With a unique product line, customizable solutions and the latest in emission control technologies, Universal helps companies comply with standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Euro and other regulatory bodies worldwide.

Universal is a global leader in acoustic, emission control and filtration technologies. Since 1959, original equipment manufacturers, packagers and end-users have relied on Universal ’s standard and customengineered products for solving noise and air pollution problems in the industrial process, power generation, marine, oil & gas, locomotive and waste water markets. An ability to design, manufacture and install natural gas and diesel exhaust systems, and turbine inlet and exhaust systems around the globe sets Universal apart from its competition. EPA air regulations and California Air Resource Board requirements are areas of expertise within the Universal family.
